STATEMENT: “If Big Tech Wants Taxpayers to Subsidize Them, Then They Need to Make Products That Benefit Americans”

Nov 06, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, The Tech Oversight Project responded to remarks from OpenAI’s Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Friar, who called for a federal bailout of OpenAI – forcing American taxpayers to subsidize the company’s AI investment. When asked if OpenAI was working with the White House on a formal arrangement, Friar refused to deny that they were talking to the Trump Administration about a potential bailout by saying, “nothing to announce.”

“‪Big Tech has jacked up our home energy bills to push AI products that no one asked for and have so far done little except drive kids to suicide. Now they’re telling us they plan to drive their businesses to the point of insolvency and they want the government to bail them out. This is a national scandal,” said Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of The Tech Oversight Project. “We were promised cancer-curing, revolutionizing advancements, and OpenAI and other Big Tech giants have so far failed to reach anything resembling their lofty promises. If Big Tech wants American taxpayers to subsidize them, then they need to make products that benefit Americans, not just their billionaire CEOs.”
