Voters Highly Critical of Tech CEOs, Support A.I. Data Center Accountability
A new PPP/Tech Oversight Project survey shows voters in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin strongly support holding Big Tech accountable for negative impacts caused by its A.I. data centers and oppose new state tax breaks for data centers. Voters in Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin show near-universal support for lawmakers taking action to tackle Big Tech abuses, and bipartisan agreement that Big Tech companies have too much political power.
The survey shows almost universal support for action to tackle Big Tech abuses:
- 89% in Michigan, 87% in Minnesota, 88% in Pennsylvania, and 88% in Wisconsin think lawmakers should do more to prevent personal sensitive data from being collected and sold to advertisers.
- 88% in Michigan, 88% in Minnesota, and 91% in Wisconsin support passing a state law to ban surveillance pricing by tech companies.
- 88% in Michigan, 84% in Minnesota, 89% in Pennsylvania, and 89% in Wisconsin support passing a kids online safety law to prevent social media companies from using exploitative algorithms and prohibit addictive features like overnight push notifications for kids.
- 88% in Michigan, 82% in Minnesota, 84% in Pennsylvania, and 88% in Wisconsin support protecting seniors and veterans from online scams, the majority of which originate on Big Tech social media platforms.
Bipartisan majorities in each state believe that Big Tech has too much political power:
- 83% of Democrats, 66% of Republicans and 81% of Independents in Michigan said that executives of Big Tech companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon have too much influence over government policy.
- 90% of Democrats, 66% of Republicans and 77% of Independents in Minnesota said that executives of Big Tech companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon have too much influence over government policy.
- 83% of Democrats, 72% of Republicans and 71% of Independents in Pennsylvania said that executives of Big Tech companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon have too much influence over government policy.
- 82% of Democrats, 65% of Republicans and 82% of Independents in Wisconsin said that executives of Big Tech companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon have too much influence over government policy.
Minnesotans support policies to hold Big Tech accountable for data center impacts:
- 74% would support a law holding Big Tech companies accountable for the increased energy usage and environmental harm caused by massive data centers in MN.
Pennsylvanians support policies to hold Big Tech accountable for data center impacts:
- 77% would support a law holding Big Tech companies accountable for the increased energy usage and environmental harm caused by massive data centers in PA.
Wisconsinites do not support tax breaks for Big Tech data centers:
- 67% oppose state lawmakers giving Big Tech more tax exemptions to construct more data centers in Wisconsin.
